  General Admission Requirements (All Students)

  To be admissible to an academic Program (University Transfer or High School Program) at the College, applicants must:
  

  • Meet the College's requirements for the program to which they are applying,
  • Demonstrate English ability, and
  • Be at least 15 years of age when starting at the College

  Applicants who do not meet the minimum English language requirements may register in a program combining academic studies with non-credit coursework in English or in the College's English for Academic Purposes Program.

  Academic Program (University transfer/Associate Degree or High School Program
  

  • There is no minimum English level required for admission to an academic program, however, all new students must demonstrate their ability in English before they register and start classes.
  • Students with a lower level of English will be scheduled for non-credit English classes before or during their academic studies at the College.

  Demonstrating English ability
  One of the following can be used to demonstrate your English ability:
  

  • Write the Columbia College Language and Writing Assessment (LWA) on arrival at the College, before registering in classes
    
    
  • A-C- grade in Communications 12 for enrolment in Writing 099 or a C grade for enrolment in English 100
    
    
  • 50% with a provincial exam in English 12 for enrolment in English 100 or 67% with a provincial exam for enrolment in English 101
    
    
  • 55% without a provincial exam in English 12 for enrolment in English 100 or 70% with a provincial exam for enrolment in English 101
    
    
  • Minimum required scores in a first-year English course taken at another BC university or college
    
    
  • A minimum score on the IELTS, CAEL, LPI, LWA, MELAB, TOEFL CBT, TOEFL PBT, TOEFL iBT. Students with a lower level of English will have to enroll in non-credit English courses.

  If you are at least 19 years old it may be possible to complete Columbia's Adult Secondary Graduation Diploma. Graduates then enter the University Transfer Program at Columbia before proceeding to university.

  • Applicants must have high school graduation (or the equivalent of British Columbia Grade 12 graduation) with a satisfactory (minimum C grade) average on academic Grade 12 subjects.
