1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade)

1. English Language Proficiency

One of:

  • Three years of full-time, face-to-face secondary or post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction and is also one of the country’s official languages. English as Additional Language courses is not included in this three-year calculation, or

  • IELTS = at least 7.0 overall, and Speaking 7.0, Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 7.0, or

  • CELBAN (Canadian English Language Benchmarks Assessment for Nurses)* with at least Speaking 8.0, Listening 10.0, Reading 8.0, Writing 7.0

Note: CELBAN is only suitable for those who have studied nursing in a country other than Canada

2. Completion of 18 credits of university-transferable courses as the following:

  • 6 credits of English
    • VCC ENGL 1100 (C+) and 1200 (C+)or Equivalent
    • VCC ENGL 1101 (C+) and 1102 (C+)
  • 6 credits in BIOL 1120 (C+) and BIOL 1220 (C+) = Human Anatomy and Physiology or equivalent (taken within 5 years of the application date)
  • 6 credits of courses (C+) in any of the following humanities or social sciences

3. Math: VCC Health Sciences Math Assessment 


Non-Academic

1. Submission of a CASPer Test score. CASPer Test scores are only valid for one admission cycle.
2. The following will be required, upon acceptance into the program:

  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) through the Ministry of Justice (you are responsible for the cost of the CRC)
  • Current CPR-C certificate, including
    • Adult/Child/Baby CPR – one rescuer
    • Adult/Child CPR – two-rescuer
    • Adult/Child/Baby – choking
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray
  • Updated immunizations record; the following immunizations are strongly recommended and may be required for practicum placements:
    • Pertussis/Diphtheria/Tetanus
    • Polio
    • Measles/Mumps/Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Influenza
    • Chicken Pox
  • Properly fitted for an N95 respiratory mask


Admission Advice

1. Information about equivalency of courses taken in BC post-secondary schools can be found at BC Transfer Guide.

2. If you have educational documents not from a Canadian or American institution, you must complete a comprehensive evaluation of education from International Credential Education Service (ICES) in addition to the above admissions requirements.

3. It is recommended that you have:

  • a caring attitude;
  • have a sincere interest in people of all ages who require all levels of care. 
  • basic computer skills
  • flexibility to adjust to early morning and evening practicum shifts at a variety of Metro Vancouver locations

5. Clinical facilities may decline individual students for their placement if a student is unable to provide proof of immunizations, satisfactory serum titers and TB screening.


 

2) Institution Admission Requirements

Applicants also have to satisfy VCC's institution admission requirements as listed below.

English Language Requirements

All applicants are required to demonstrate the appropriate level of English language proficiency to function successfully in an English-speaking classroom. 

Option A: 
If you have completed three years of full-time high school or post-secondary education an a recognized Canadian institution where English is the language of instruction, the following is required:
Duolingo English test = at least 120 overall. 

OR 

Option B. 
If you have not completed three years of full-time high school or post-secondary education at an accredited Canadian institution where English is the language of instruction, one of the following is required:

  • TOEFL iBT, Internet-based = at least 91 overall, with Speaking 23, Writing 25, Reading 22, Listening 21
  • IELTS Academic = 7.0 overall, with Speaking 7, Writing 7, Reading 6.5, Listening 7.5

Note: the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) and the College of Pharmacists of BC only accepts the TOEFL and IELTS as proof of English Language Proficiency for students in this category.

BC Transfer Student

Students transferring between post-secondary institutions in BC may refer to the BC Transfer Guide to search course transferability.

If you have completed some post-secondary education at another institution, you can possibly earn transfer credits toward your program at VCC. Students are responsible for initiating the transfer credit process by submitting a formal request (an Approval for Transfer Credit form) to Registrar's Office attaching all required documents. 

Out-of-Province Transfer Student

If you have completed some post-secondary education at another institution, you can possibly earn transfer credits toward your program at VCC. Mature Student

You must be at least 18 years old (unless you have graduated from Secondary School) to meet the general admission requirement for VCC. In addition, specific program admission requirements must also be met.
