Academic Requirement(s):

For International Students:

1. BC High School graduation (or equivalent)
2. One of the following:
    • IELTS (6.5)
    • TOEFL (internet-based test = at least 80)
    • completion of Langara English for Academic Purpose (LEAP) 6

For Domestic Students, one of the following:

  • be at least 19 years of age by the first day of the first semester of attendance
  • BC Adult Basic Education (A.B.E.)
  • BC General Education Development (G.E.D)

Admission Advice:

1. Aside from program entry/admission requirements, there are also specific course registration requirements (called prerequisites) which are listed within Langara College course description.  For course registration and program completion purposes, you will need to meet the prerequisites of individual courses in the program.

English Language Requirements

Summary

You must possess a level of English proficiency sufficient to support studies at Langara College.

If planning to enroll in a first-semester English or Communications courses or certain Biology, Economics or Philosophy courses you must normally take the Langara English Test (LET) or BC Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test before the semester you want to register. Students who have at least at 80% average in BC English 12 or BC English Literature 12 (or equivalent) are exempt from this requirement. Course prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions which can be found in Program & Courses

Out-of-Province

Admission to Langara requires you to meet the following requirements:

  • Specific Program Admission Requirements (detailed separately in Education Planner)

On request, up to 60% of Langara College diploma, certificate, and associate degree program requirements may be transferred from another recognized post-secondary institution. These credits must normally be completed within the first 60% of your program.

To request transfer credit, you must submit a Transfer Credit Request Form (available from the Registrar's Office or on Langara's website), an official transcript from the transferring institution, and the appropriate fees.

The deadline for transfer credit to meet program prerequisites* is two months before the semester begins; the deadline for transfer credit to meet graduation requirements is the end of February each year.

Footnote (*): You may also go to the appropriate department for a "pre-requisite override" to meet the prerequisite requirements for your desired program.

Mature Student

If you are at least 19 years old by the first day of your classes, you are considered a mature student. This status enables you to meet Langara's academic admission requirements. In addition, you must also meet the college's Language Requirement and the specific admission requirements of your intended program.

Other Student (including Special Consideration)

Conditional Admission

Students currently in Grade 12 who are missing only one course for Grade 12 graduation may appeal for admission to Langara. To be considered for conditional admission, you must:

  • be currently enrolled in the missing course, maintaining at least a 60% average;
  • complete and submit an "Application for Admission form" and an "Appeal for Admission and Re-admission form", both available from the Registrar's Office;
  • submit the BC secondary school transcript (either paper or electronic).

Secondary/Post-Secondary Concurrent Studies

BC Secondary students entering or currently in Grade 12 who have demonstrated academic excellence may apply for limited admission to university transfer or open career courses while attending secondary school.

Enrolment is limited to three credits each semester. Admission is approved on a semester by semester basis until you have met Grade 12 graduation requirements or turn 19 years old.

To apply under this category you must submit:

  • an application for admission, co-signed by a parent or legal guardian;
  • a letter of support from your secondary school principal;
  • an official transcript of your Grade 11 year; and
  • a copy of any interim transcripts of your Grade 12 year (if available).

Appeals for admission and re-admission are accepted at the Registrar's Office up to one week before the first day of classes.

Final Note: Successful registration also depends on you having the required prerequisites for your intended courses or program.
