1) Program Admission Requirements

Admission to this BEd program is restricted to students with a previous degree and who are enrolled in the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education. 


1. Must be enrolled in the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education program. Refer to the UVIC calendar for the diploma admissions requirements.

2. Recognized undergraduate degree.

3. Two approved university English courses C+ or higher.

4. GPA 4.00 or higher on approved studies in two teachable subject areas at the 300 and/or 400 level.

5. GPA 3.0 or higher on the most recent session.

Non Academic

1. Letter of Intent.

2. Current Resume.

3. Two references from individuals who have observed your interacting with children/youth in educative ways in at least two different settings.

4. Participation in an interview may also be required.


Admission Advice

1. This program is for those who wish to teach one or two of the following subjects in a secondary school: art, biology, chemistry, computer science, English, French, general science, mathematics, music, physical and health education, physics, social studies, Spanish, teaching innovation in education, theatre.

2. Students who completed the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education with music teaching areas between 2011 and 2016 will need an additional 15.0 units of approved courses to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree. Please consult with an academic advisor.

2) Institution Admission Requirements

Applicants also have to satisfy UVic's institution admission requirements as listed below.

English Language Requirements


One of the following (minimum scores):

  • 86% on the BC English 12 provincial exam within the last three years
  • 86% in English 12 in another Canadian province within the last three years
  • Level 6 on the Language Proficiency Index (LPI)
  • A score of 4 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English Language and Composition
  • A score of 4 on IB Higher Level English
  • 1.5 units of transferable university level English credits
  • A degree from an accredited English speaking university

If you do not meet one of these requirements, you must write the Language Proficiency Index to determine placement in an appropriate English course
