This instructional program class comprises any program that generally prepares individuals to perform the duties of administrative assistants and/or secretaries and stenographers. These programs include courses in business communications, principles of business law, word processing and data entry, office machines operation and maintenance, office procedures, public relations, secretarial accounting, filing systems and records management, and report preparation.

Supervisors of general office and administrative support workers supervise and coordinate the activities of workers in the following minor groups: Office support and court services occupations (1410) and Survey, statistical and data entry occupations (1411). They are employed throughout the public and private sectors.

Administrative assistants perform a variety of administrative duties in support of managerial and professional employers. They are employed throughout the public and private sectors.

General office support workers prepare correspondence, reports, statements and other material, operate office equipment, answer telephones, verify, record and process forms and documents such as contracts and requisitions and perform general clerical duties according to established procedures. They are employed in offices throughout the public and private sectors.

The Administrative Assistant Specialty Certificate concentrates on the specific skills and concepts you need for employment as an executive administrative assistant in fast-paced and complex office environments. 

To earn the Administrative Assistant Specialty Certificate, students must complete all courses listed in the [Office Administration Certificate](https://www.educationplannerbc.ca/institutions/BBDE561E-7C33-459E-9228-D053B52BDF19/programs/COTR-office-administration-certificate), and the Administrative Assistant Specialty.

Administrative Assistant Specialty Certificate

This Administrative Studies Certificate is designed to assist individuals and communities to meet the leadership and management challenges of business, Indigenous self-sufficiency and self-government. You will gain a combination of general organizational knowledge, specific technical analytical and management skills, and be encouraged to develop a management style consistent with traditional and/or current Indigenous values, beliefs, cultures and customs. Additionally, you will be enriched with the practical knowledge that comes from working in Indigenous organizations and you'll be qualified to transfer certain courses into advanced studies of management and business in a variety of university degree programs.

Administrative Studies Certificate

The Administrative Assistant Certificate focuses on word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, computerized accounting, and presentation software. You'll also learn business communications, business math, office procedures, effective job search techniques, accounting, and self-management skills. There is a three-week practicum component to this certificate. Upon graduation may be employed as receptionists, general clerks, administrative or executive assistants, and other similar careers.

Administrative Assistant Certificate

The Virtual Assistant Certificate is for students who are interested in becoming virtual administration professionals, working remotely for clients who are anywhere in the world. This program will teach you skills to be an effective administrative assistant while building your own virtual assistant business. Students will develop a business and marketing plan for their business, efficiently produce documents using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook), understand basic accounting functions and how to keep their business profitable, demonstrate an understanding for all aspects of office operations, develop online collaboration skills using software and various tools, and discover effective online communications for meetings, tasks, etc. The delivery of this program will be hybrid - synchronously working with instructors and other students at specific times with live lectures and discussion and asynchronously at the program pace to manage their projects and time.
