These programs include courses in principles of chemistry and biochemistry, technical mathematics, computer applications, radiochemistry, industrial biochemistry, chemical instrumentation, physical chemistry, laboratory research methods, industrial processing methods and equipment, and test equipment operation and maintenance.

Chemical technologists and technicians provide technical support and services or may work independently in chemical engineering, chemical and biochemical research and analysis, industrial chemistry, chemical quality control and environmental protection. They are employed by research and development and quality control laboratories, consulting engineering companies, in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and a variety of other manufacturing and processing industries, and by utilities, health, educational and government establishments.

Agricultural and fish products inspectors inspect agricultural and fish products for conformity to prescribed production, storage and transportation standards. They are employed by government departments and agencies and by private sector food processing companies. Supervisors of agricultural and fish products inspectors are also included in this unit group.

The Chemical and Environmental Technology diploma program offers the student a broad background in technology and skills that can be applied to many industries. Near the end of their first year in the program, students will choose one of two options: Analytical Science or Process Engineering. These options are not exclusive — all students will have enough exposure to both topic areas to qualify for a full spectrum of varied employment opportunities. Choosing an option allows students to pick an area of interest for increased emphasis while still keeping their future options open.

This Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology Diploma will prepare you for a career in lab work or transfer into the third year of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry or microbiology. You will receive training in lab safety, good lab practices, and lab technique in addition to your courses. Upon graduation, you'll be equipped for a career in laboratory work in areas such as cancer research, microbial disease research, drug development, plant biotech, or environmental protection. Or, if your goal is a Bachelor of Science degree, you can transfer into third year studies at a B.C. university.





Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology Diploma

The Chemistry Diploma gives you foundational knowledge and laboratory skills in chemistry. Through their laboratory experience, you will have the opportunity to engage in practical hands-on learning activities using chemicals, scientific equipment, and technology.
