This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the systematic study of crime as a sociopathological phenomenon, the behaviour of criminals, and the social institutions evolved to respond to crime. These programs include courses in the theory of crime, psychological and social bases of criminal behaviour, social value systems and the theory of punishment, criminal law and criminal justice systems, penology, rehabilitation and recidivism, studies of specific types of crime, social attitudes and policy, and applications to specific issues in law enforcement administration and policy.

Statistical officers and workers in related research support occupations provide statistical and research support services to a wide range of businesses and organizations. These workers conduct statistical routines, monitor trends, compile data and prepare charts, graphs, summaries and reports in support of organizational information needs and research activities. They are employed throughout the public and private sectors. Statistical officers who are also supervisors are included in this unit group.

Commissioned police officers plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate police force administration and police activities such as maintaining law and order and detecting and preventing crime. They are employed by municipal, provincial and federal governments. This unit group includes officers from the rank of staff sergeant to police commissioner. Commissioned officers in the railway police, deputy chief coroners, and deputy chief medical examiners are also included in this unit group.

Probation officers monitor the conduct and behaviour of criminal offenders serving probation terms and serving sentences of two years less a day. They are employed by provincial governments. Parole officers monitor the reintegration of criminal offenders serving the remainder of sentences on conditional release and individuals that are subject to a long-term supervision order. They also assess inmates and develop rehabilitation programs for criminal offenders who are incarcerated in correctional facilities. They are employed by federal and provincial governments. Both probation and parole officers work in the community and in correctional facilities including young offender's correctional facilities.

To work as a correctional officer in Canada, you need to complete the Correctional Training program through Correctional Service Canada. Eligibility is achieved by passing a series of assessments and then successfully completing the program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Criminology Degree has applied skills in areas such as crime prevention, risk assessment, demographic research, crisis intervention and conflict de-escalation. You'll have opportunities to strengthen them through work placements with the Vancouver Police Department, private security companies and other agencies. You’ll graduate with 100 hours of work experience in the criminal justice field. Upon graduation, you'll be qualified to provide legal services to new immigrants or refugees, become a lawyer, or police, parole or probation officer and more. 

Applied Criminology: Bachelor of Arts Degree - Major or Honours

The Bachelor of Arts, Major in Criminology program provides students with a broad, liberal education in social science, criminal justice, and law. Students learn scientific research methods, legal, philosophical and theoretical approaches to aid in understanding crime and related social problems, and social responses to crime. The BA degree program builds on the central core of method and theory and affords students opportunities to hone abstract, logical thinking, and critical understanding of the issues, arguments, and debates that shape the discipline's character and aims.

The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology is about crime as both an individual and social phenomenon, with research on the origins and forms of crime, its causes and consequences, and social and governmental reactions to it. You'll take courses in criminology, psychology and sociology of criminal behaviour, criminal law, the justice system, and more. Upon graduation, you'll be qualified to work in a variety of careers, including social service, corrections, immigration, law enforcement, law, policy, and more. 

The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology explores criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system. Students will study the criminal mind through courses that look at sociology, psychology and the Canadian legal system.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice is about the criminal justice system and delve into the complex issues surrounding it such as the causes, prevention, and law enforcement responses to criminal behaviour. You'll examine the historical evolution of criminological thought and learn to view criminology as both a science and profession. You learn to identify the psychological and sociological factors that drives an individual to crime and how the criminal justice system is applied. In your third and fourth year, you develop your analytical and critical thinking skills by designing your own research project. Upon graduation, you'll have gained the vocabulary and critical discernment to apply criminological and criminal justice principles to effect individual, community, and organizational challenges.

Criminal Justice Bachelor of Arts Degree - Major or Honours

The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology Degree introduces you to criminal law, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and case-law decisions made by the courts. You will examine in separate courses the three main components of the criminal justice system—police, courts, and corrections—that form an organized response to crime. The program addresses the trends and correlates of crime, including the influences of age, ethnicity, gender, and social class. The major explanations for crime try to account for these patterns by looking at historical, individual, and social causes. The criminological focus is broadened with courses from other disciplines in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
