Choreographers

To work as a dancer in B.C., you may choose to become a member of the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists. Eligibility is achieved by being a dancer, choreographer, producer, teacher, student, or other cultural worker in Western Canada.

Dancers

This instructional program class comprises any general program that prepares individuals to express ideas, feelings, and/or inner visions through the performance of one or more of the dance disciplines, including but not limited to ballet, modern, jazz, ethnic, and folk dance, and that focuses on the study and analysis of dance as a cultural phenomenon. These programs include courses in technique, choreography, Laban notation, dance history and criticism, and dance production.

Dancers are employed by ballet and dance companies, television and film productions and nightclubs and similar establishments. This unit group also includes dance teachers who are usually employed by dance academies and dance schools.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance with the National Ballet School Teachers' Training allows you to initiate your studies at SFU or the National Ballet School (NBS). To obtain a BFA degree and a NBS Teacher Training Diploma, you must spend their first three years at SFU, then transfer to the NBS for the remaining two years. If you transfer to SFU after three years of study at NBS, you'll then complete two – three years at SFU. You'll take courses in dance, composition, choreography, improvisation, dance history, movement aesthetics, and more. Upon graduation, you'll be equipped to work as a performer and choreographer, and in a variety of fields including education, arts administration, physical therapy, and more. 

Dance with the National Ballet School Teachers' Training: Diploma and Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree

The Dance diploma provides skills to start your career as a professional dancer by learning a full repertoire including ballet, modern, jazz, and flamenco in addition to arts entrepreneurship and administration.
