To work as a land surveyor in B.C., you must register with the Association of British Columbia Land Surveyors (ABCLS). Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited bachelor's degree in geomatics, 24 months of articling under an experienced BCLS, and completion of ABCLS's professional exam and assessment interview.

To practice as a geomatics technologist in B.C., you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited diploma program and 24 months of progressive work experience, 12 of which must be at the technologist profile or higher in a Canadian work environment.

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to fly unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for commercial, professional or personal use, and qualifies individuals to sit for the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or Transport Canada (TC) Remote Pilot Certificate with small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) rating knowledge examination. These programs include courses in principles of unmanned aircraft system design and performance; aircraft flight systems and controls; airway safety and traffic regulations; and governmental rules and regulations pertaining to piloting unmanned aircraft.

Drone Operations Micro-credentials

Urban and land use planners develop plans and recommend policies for managing land use, physical facilities and associated services for urban and rural areas and remote regions. They are employed by all levels of government, land developers, engineering and other consulting companies, or may work as private consultants.

Land surveyors plan, direct and conduct legal surveys to establish the location of real property boundaries, contours and other natural or human-made features, and prepare and maintain cross-sectional drawings, official plans, records and documents pertaining to these surveys. They are employed by federal, provincial and municipal governments, private sector land surveying establishments, real estate development, natural resource, engineering and construction firms, or they may be self-employed.

Land survey technologists and technicians conduct or participate in surveys to determine the exact locations and relative positions of natural features and other structures on the earth's surface, underground and underwater. They are employed by all levels of government, architectural and engineering firms, and by private sector surveying establishments.

This microcredential first guides participants through Transport Canada regulations pertaining to the safe and legal operation of small remotely piloted aircraft systems (sRPAS). Next, there is a thorough discussion of elements related to conducting a site survey and mission planning. This is followed by an overview of structure-from-motion (SfM)-based photogrammetry image processing techniques using color, multi-spectral, and thermal drone images. The microcredential ends with practical examples of NDVI, radiometric thermal orthomosaics, and multi-spectral GIS analysis.

This Micro-Credential is tailored for individuals seeking to pursue advanced studies in RPAS 200 (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems 200). RPAS 200 has been meticulously developed and reviewed to ensure that you meet the educational prerequisites set by Transport Canada for advanced RPAS/drone pilots engaged in commercial operations. 

Drone Applications for Risk Assessment Micro-credential

This program is your introduction to Geographic Information System (GIS) skills as they apply to operational drone mapping. You'll learn about drone types, data collection and data application, as well as drone piloting theory and analyzing drone imagry.

Drone to Map GIS Micro-credential

The Drone Technologies Application and Operations Micro-credential will cover drone history and data products, drone applications and equipment considerations, safety guidelines and risk mitigation, field operations and mission planning, post-field data processing and will provide learners with hands-on experience flying drones. Upon successful program completion, learners will be prepared to attempt the Transport Canada Small Basic or Small Advanced RPAS Exam and Advanced Flight Review.
