Employment Skills Programs

Retail salespersons sell, rent or lease a range of technical and non-technical goods and services directly to consumers. Visual merchandisers plan, create and implement windows and in-store displays. They are employed by stores and other retail businesses, as well as wholesale businesses that sell on a retail basis to the public.

Airline ticket and service agents issue tickets, provide fare quotations, make reservations, conduct passenger check-in, trace missing baggage, arrange for cargo shipments and perform other related customer service duties to assist airline passengers. They are employed by airline companies.

Cashiers operate cash registers, optical price scanners, computers or other equipment to record and accept payment for the purchase of goods, services and admissions. They are employed in stores, restaurants, theatres, recreational and sports establishments, currency exchange booths, government offices, business offices and other service, retail and wholesale establishments.

Store shelf stockers, clerks and order fillers pack customers' purchases, price items, stock shelves with merchandise, and fill online, mail and telephone orders. They are employed in retail establishments, such as grocery, hardware and department stores, and in warehouses.

Janitors, caretakers and heavy-duty cleaners clean and maintain the interior and exterior of commercial, institutional and residential buildings and their surrounding grounds. They are employed by office and apartment building management companies, condominium corporations, educational institutions, health care facilities, recreational and shopping facilities, religious, industrial and other establishments.

The Education and Career Planning Certificate is an online, tuition-free education and career exploration program that will help you develop a realistic awareness of your interests, abilities and potential, and increase your self confidence. You'll learn about work-search strategies and current labour-market trends, and you’ll have the opportunity to set personal, career, and educational goals. The program welcomes adult learners at any stage of life who are engaged in a transition to explore career and educational opportunities. A strengths-based approach in a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment supports resilience, self-awareness, wellness, and personal leadership skills.

Education and Career Planning Certificate

Through the Employment Preparation Certificate you will develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge and practices that prepare you for entry-level employment training. You'll explore interests, values and opportunities then set goals, and develop a learning plan to build essential skills for life, learning and work. Essential skills include the following: reading, document use, writing, numeracy, oral communication, thinking skills (such as: problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, job task planning, organization and finding/recalling information), working with others, digital technology use and continuous learning. You will explore lifestyle practices that develop resilience and that support readiness for entry-level work. 

Employment Preparation Certificate

In the Occupations Launch program, you will develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge that prepare you for finding and maintaining stable occupation in entry level work and/or non-paid community contributions. You will explore the values, practices and benefits related to lifelong learning and being connected to communities through meaningful contributions and esteemed roles. Each specialization can be completed in 15 weeks, and part-time study options are available. You can learn at your own pace and level, and receive ongoing guidance and support to connect with resources and occupational opportunities that reflect your abilities, interests, and values. You will apply your learning to create stability and advancement within a chosen occupational sector (paid or unpaid).

The Sector-Specific Employment Training  helps you develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge that prepare you for employment in a variety of entry-level work sectors. You will be introduced to the language, practices and skills used in different sectors through applied learning activities and work experience placements.

The Discover Employability Certificate will help you strengthen your workplace knowledge with training in job preparation, health and safety, computer skills, social skills, transition skills, personal finance and work experience.

The Education and Employment Access Certificate provides skills to succeed in your future education and/or vocational goals. Individual Courses in Career and Professional Development

The Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WLN) Program provides students experiencing barriers to employment and education with opportunities to develop the appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to achieve success in future career and academic endeavors. Graduates of the WLN Program will have gained an array of literacy and numeracy skills as well as practical skills deemed beneficial in work and academic settings. This program models experiential learning in a safe, supportive, hands-on environment that builds confidence in learners while introducing students to the college and its higher-level programming. Upon completion of the program, students may choose to enter directly into employment or ladder on to more advanced programming at the college, such as Introduction to Trades, Construction Labourer, Professional Cook, Career and College Prep, and so on. This is a ten-week, full-time program with eight weeks (timetable may change slightly depending on scheduling requirements) of hands-on, experiential instruction (150 hours) and a community-based two-week practicum/project (20 hours).

Practicums generally occur outside of the college setting and while students tend to seek job placements or projects in work areas close to CMTN campus communities, it may be possible to utilize placements in other nearby communities. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from practicum sites and may be required to work a variety of shifts. Practicum sites are selected to match student’s realistic training needs and interests in a genuine job industry environment that support future student goals.

The Workplace Skills Training program prepares you for entry-level positions in local industry and introduces you to the college environment. Explore your interests and aptitudes while developing social, personal and practical skills needed in the workplace. A community work-experience placement gives you the opportunity to develop and practice necessary employment skills. The Career and Employment Preparation Certificate is designed for those who have had barriers to employment. You will learn how to use your skills and abilities to choose a career and build your self-confidence to enter the workforce or pursue further training. A four-week work placement related to your career goals will help you integrate the skills you have practised in the classroom.

The Employment Skills Access program is designed to assist you in acquiring essential skills for the workplace in British Columbia. The program emphasizes the knowledge, skills, and standards relevant to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals, families and communities. The program also includes First Aid, Serving It Right, Food safe, Health and Safety and First Host. The Employment Skills Access program focuses on Indigenous content in the curriculum. Admission is open to learners that are unemployed, under-employed, Indigenous, Immigrant, older workers, persons with disabilities or who are socially marginalized.

The Employment Transition Grounds & Custodial Assistant program provides students with diverse learning needs an opportunity to attend employability courses, gain work related certificates, and receive industry specific skill development training in basic grounds maintenance/horticulture and custodial/light duty cleaner areas.  Students participate in a job shadow placement as well as a work experience, in either grounds maintenance, or custodial industries.

The ESTR (Education and Skills Training) program offers three certificates for students who have experienced barriers to employment to prepare them for entry level positions within the workforce. Through classroom work and hands on experiential learning, you will develop job readiness skills, may complete industry recognized certificates, and do other activities to prepare you for entry level positions within a number of areas of employment. These activities may include work experience in areas on campus or with local businesses. ESTR certificates are:

Retail Worker.

Veterans Transition Certificate in International Development & Human Security (UBCV)

The Workplace Training in Attitudes, Skills, and Knowledge (TASK) is a pre-employment program for adult students living with disabilities who want to explore employment opportunities, learn self-management, and prepare for a job in a safe and supportive classroom environment. As a TASK student, you participate in a series of employability workshops, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), FoodSafe, First Aid, and WorldHost. You also learn basic computer skills and get support as you explore career options, prepare your résumé, and rehearse for interviews. In addition, you take part in three job placements to gain on-the-job experience with supportive employers in your community.

In the Career Access statement of completion, you will improve your computer skills while learning how to research occupations, set goals, and conduct a successful job search. You will also learn communication skills and how to make career decisions.

Your training needs are met through a program that includes community awareness, generic work skills, specific skill training, career exploration, and work practicum placements. Classroom learning components alternate with work practicum placements suited to your strengths and abilities. Intended for adults with cognitive disabilities.

The Essential Employment Skills Certificate (EESC) will help Deaf and hard of hearing students develop necessary job and communication skills. Students will apply strategies and tools related to work experience, career research, employment skills and self-assessment.
