To work as a biological technologist or technician in B.C., you may choose to register with the College of Applied Biologists. Eligibility is achieved through completion of a recognized program and training courses.

Biological technologists and technicians

To work as a conservation and fishery officer that will set and detonate explosives in B.C., you must have blaster certification issued by WorkSafeBC.

To work as a conservation and fishery officer in B.C., you need the correct pesticide certification for the type of work you will be performing. Eligibility is achieved by passing the requisite exam through Service B.C.

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on environment-related issues using scientific, social scientific, and/or humanistic approaches. These programs include courses in the basic principles of ecology and environmental science and related subjects such as policy, politics, law, economics, social aspects, planning, pollution control, natural resources, and the interactions of human beings and nature.

Environmental Studies Diplomas

Biological technologists and technicians provide technical support and services to scientists, engineers and other professionals working in fields such as agriculture, resource management, environmental protection, plant and animal biology, microbiology, cell and molecular biology and health sciences, or may work independently in these fields. They are employed in both laboratory and field settings by governments, manufacturers of food products, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, biotechnology companies, health, research and educational institutions, environmental consulting companies, and resource and utilities companies.

Conservation and fishery officers, inspectors and observers enforce federal and provincial regulations established for the protection of fish, wildlife and other natural resources and collect and relay information on resource management. They are employed by federal and provincial government departments.

Environmental Technology Diploma

The Applied Coastal Ecology (ACE) Diploma prepares you for careers in coastal natural resources management, ecosystem restoration, environmental monitoring, and many others. You will balance foundational learning in areas suchs a biology, geography, chemistry and oceanography with applied courses in areas such as salmon, ground fish and shellfish management, stream habitat restoration, rainforest ecology, and wildlife management. You will participate in real-world, community-based projects to gain employment-ready experience.  

Applied Coastal Ecology Diploma

Environmental consultants, industry and government seek out graduates from our Environmental Protection Technology program. They do this because KPU's graduates have developed the skills needed to offer professional advice on a wide range of subjects, including: environmental impact assessment; hazardous and non-hazardous waste management; waste reduction and reuse strategies; air, soil and water pollution prevention and monitoring; compliance auditing; and contaminated site investigation and remediation. This skill set is based on an integrated, hands-on training program that gives graduates a good working knowledge of physical and life sciences, including general biology, ecology, toxicology, chemistry, physics and statistics. 

Environmental Protection Technology Diploma

The Environmental Resources Technology Diploma focuses on natural resource sectors including forestry, fishery enhancement, environmental assessment, mining and grassland ecology. The Envionmental Resources Technology Diploma is the second year of the program following the first year certificate program. Forest Surveys and Environmental Assessment Surveys integrate year one measurement skills into applications that are important for assessing the land base. Courses in Wildlife, Fisheries, Grasslands, Environmental Planning, Watershed Hydrology, and Timber Development give students the theoretical knowledge needed to design and carry out field studies. Upon completion of year two of the program, students are granted an Environmental Resources Technologist Diploma which qualifies students to work within a variety of disciplines including forestry, fisheries, wildlife, environmental monitoring, environmental assessment, and working with communities on helping with environmental projects.

Environmental Resources Technology Diploma

The Environmental Studies Diploma offers an interdisciplinary opportunity to understand the physical principles governing the environment and the social and cultural aspects that influence human behaviour towards the environment. You will gain a holistic knowledge of the environment through courses from the sciences, social sciences and humanities. The interdisciplinary model will equip you with the critical and analytical skills to think through the factors that influence our understanding of the environment. Upon graduation, you'll be qualified for further studies or to work in the environmental sector. 

Environmental Studies Diploma

This program prepares students to meet the growing need for technologists capable of assisting in all areas of land use and environmental planning, environmental chemistry, hydrology, applied ecology, microbiology and geographic information systems (GIS). Graduates possess the practical field and laboratory skills and technical competencies to acquire, compile, analyze, evaluate and present environmental information and to integrate it effectively into formal planning and review processes.
