This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to generally function as creative artists in the visual and plastic media. These programs include courses in the traditional fine arts media (drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, CAD/CAM) and/or modern media (ceramics, textiles, intermedia, photography, digital images); theory of art; colour theory; composition and perspective; anatomy; the techniques and procedures for maintaining equipment and managing a studio; and art portfolio marketing.

Painters, sculptors and other visual artists create original paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings and other artistic works. They are usually self-employed. This unit group also includes art instructors and teachers, who are usually employed by art schools.

The First Nations Fine Arts Diploma seeks to honour and support the rich culture and tradition of First Nations art in the Northwest. The First Nations Fine Arts program includes field trips to important cultural events and sites, museums and galleries. Visiting artists, dignitaries and cultural advocates enhance the learning environment with their knowledge, wisdom and experience. You mount a number of public art exhibits each year to acquire the skills required by professional artists to display, promote and sell their own creative work. All students are expected to participate in carving program legacy projects.

First Nations Fine Arts Diploma

Upon completion of the two-year diploma program at KPU, graduates will have acquired both intellectual and technical skills to work effectively with a wide range of media. With these skills, students can continue to develop their creative potential individually, through the BFA, Visual Arts program, or at another post-secondary institution. Most Fine Arts credits are university transferable. The department recommends that students consider a course of study that includes specializing in one or more areas such as ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, print media, sculpture, and digital media.

Fine Arts Diploma

The Fine Arts Diploma emphasizes hands-on skills, materiality and ethical practices within a supportive community of makers, learners and thinkers. The program emphasis is on studio art with the opportunity for specialization in the second year. Requirements include academic courses in English, art history, and cultural theory. Drawing and design are considered core courses. You must complete drawing and design each term before advancing to the next term.  within a supportive community of makers, learners and thinkers. The Fine Arts Diploma fosters strong problem solving, critical thinking, research and studio practice skills. Students will develop critical and theoretical skills in a broad range of mediums encompassing traditional, interdisciplinary and digital arts practice. Students will be challenged to see the world around them from different perspectives and interpret those experiences originally and creatively. 

Fine Arts Diploma (NIC)

The Digital Arts Diploma offers a solid foundation in traditional and graphic arts, web site development, video and sound production, animation and digital media. You will gain the skills required for advanced production techniques, effective project management and the new media business environment.
