FOODSAFE Level 1 is required for food service establishment operators and front line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. FOODSAFE Level 2 is required for foodservice owners, managers, kitchen managers, and executive chefs who have taken Level 1. You can earn these certifications through successful completions of the courses.

Food service supervisors

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals in food production and service for governmental, commercial or independently owned institutional food establishments, and related food industry occupations. These programs include courses in selecting, storing, preparing, and serving food and food products; basic nutrition; sanitation, and food safety; the use and care of commercial equipment; serving techniques; and the operation of institutional food establishments.

Food Related Certificates

Food service supervisors supervise, direct and coordinate the activities of workers who prepare, portion and serve food. They are employed by hospitals and other health care establishments and by cafeterias, catering companies and other food service establishments.

The Food Safety Associate Certificate is for people who are already working in food industry, but are looking for career development, professional growth, and résumé relevancy. You can complete the certificate or just take courses as you need, and will be able to use your new training directly at your workplace. You may also be able to seek higher level positions in areas like quality assurance planning, food process and operations, and food industry management and supervision. 

Food Safety: Associate Certificate (Part-time)

The Local Industry Skills Training Certificate, Food Services, is designed for students who have a barrier to learning and/or employment. The program is self-paced, with classroom, lab and work experience components. Participate in a practicum with a variety of food service facilities serviced by Douglas College. The range of skills taught varies, but can include bussing tables, dishwashing, cleaning, salad bar preparation, basic food preparation, customer service, and safety and sanitation.

Local Industry Skills Training (Food Services) Certificate

The Food Service Careers certificate teaches skills and knowledge to work in the food service industry through practical experience in community-based work settings. Intended for adults with cognitive disabilities. The program begins with an orientation and introduction to basic job readiness skills, industry orientation, Worker Safety, FOODSAFE™, kitchen awareness, and use of kitchen knives. You will progress from kitchen basics to food preparation and cooking skills. Classroom/kitchen learning components then alternate with three supervised workplace practicum placements, four (4) weeks in length, which progressively increase in variety and complexity of tasks.
