To work as an interior designer with a protected title in B.C., you must register as a member with the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of a bachelors degree in interior design followed by obtaining a prescribed amount of supervised work experience.

To work as an interior designer in B.C., you may choose to take the certification examination from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. Eligibility is achieved through completion of a minimum of 60 interior design credit hours from an accredited post-secondary institution and work experience requirements that vary depending on the level of education attained.

This instructional program class comprises any program in the applied visual arts that prepares individuals to apply artistic principles and techniques to the professional planning, designing, equipping, and furnishing residential and commercial interior spaces. These programs include courses in computer applications drafting and graphic techniques; principles of interior lighting, acoustics, systems integration, and colour coordination; furniture and furnishings; textiles and their finishing; the history of interior design and period styles; basic structural design; building codes and inspection regulations; and applications to office, hotel, factory, restaurant and housing design.

The Diploma in Interior Design is designed for students seeking a career in residential and commercial interior design fields.

The Diploma focuses on commercial design including hospitality, offices and retail environments.

Students will study advanced design theory, commercial space planning, sustainability practices, codes and barrier-free compliance, lighting, design history, advanced 2D & 3D visual communication, critical reading and writing, construction drawings, and architectural millwork. Students will gain hands-on experience in the Joinery shop to expand their understanding of millwork details and assembly. Students will achieve both a strong academic and technical foundation on completion of this program. Students learn from industry-based faculty and develop extensive practical skills for rewarding careers.

All students intending to continue to the Bachelor of Interior Design must first complete the Diploma in Interior Design.

Interior Design: Diploma

The Interior Design Diploma is designed for students seeking a career in residential and commercial interior design fields, focusing on commercial design including hospitality, offices and retail environments. Interior Design: Diploma (Part-time)

The Residential Interiors Diploma builds on the Certificate in Interior Design Fundamentals and provides the opportunity for students to further their education in the residential field. If you complete the courses in the third and fourth terms of the program and graduate with a Diploma in Residential Interiors, you will have the skills and credential needed to work beyond the kitchen and bath industries in the broader residential interiors field.
