Translators translate written material from one language to another. Interpreters translate oral communication from one language to another during speeches, meetings, conferences, debates and conversation, or in court or before administrative tribunals. Terminologists conduct research to itemize terms connected with a certain field, define them and find equivalents in another language. Sign language interpreters use sign language to translate spoken language and vice versa during meetings, conversations, television programs or in other instances. Translators, terminologists and interpreters are employed by government, private translation and interpretation agencies, in-house translation services, large private corporations, international organizations and the media, or they may be self-employed. Sign language interpreters work in schools and courts, and for social service agencies, interpretation services, government services and television stations, or they may be self-employed.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Linguistics is about investigating language systematically, exploring how it is used in day to day life, and discovering how it is realized in the human mind. You will learn how to construct logical arguments through analytical reasoning, probe language behaviour with experiments, and apply linguistic insights in human health, language technology, and language teaching.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Asian Language and Culture focuses on the history and culture of a variety of Asian societies. You can explore literary and religious traditions, as well as gender relations in Asian cultures. The Bachelor of Arts Degree in First Nations and Endangered Languages is about the processes and protocols for the documentation, conservation, revitalization, and reclamation of endangered languages, cultures, and Indigenous knowledge systems locally, regionally, and internationally. This interdisciplinary program offers courses in First Nations and Endangered languages at all levels, from introductory to advanced. Your career opportunities will vary widely across a range of fields including Indigenous organizations, education, government, business, media, museums, law, and others.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in German promotes autonomous learning and the development of critical thinking skills through student-centred teaching practices. You'll acquire communicative competence in five proficiencies of language learning: listening, reading, speaking, writing, and culture. You'll also have the opportunity to take courses in literature, culture, and business before graduating and utilizing your language, reading, and writing skills. 

German: Bachelor of Arts Degree - Major or Honours (UBCV)

The Bachelor of Arts in Languages, overall, consists of courses in French and Spanish language literature and culture, as well as a third language in German, Hebrew, Japanesse, Korean, and Mandarin. The Bachelor of NłeɁkepmx Language Fluency (B.Nłek.) degree is a language-specific program emphasizing immersion-based language learning and community engaged partnerships for Indigenous language revitalization. The B.Nłek. is a block-transfer program; the Department of Community, Culture and Global Studies provides the third- and fourth-year of the four-year degree program. Admission is based on previous completion of a two-year Diploma of NłeɁkepmx Language Fluency at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology.

The Bachelor of Nsyilxcn Language Fluency is designed so you reach a profound knowledge of the language. Over the course of the program, you'll achieve an advanced level of written and oral proficiency through classes that tackle language skills, instructional capacity, Indigenous ways of knowing, and more. During the final year of this program, you will participate in a internship with a relevant community partner as well as a personal language project as a capstone for the degree.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Romance Studies allows you to study the literatures, languages, and cultures of the Romance World. You'll have the opportunity to study more than one of the Romance languages, as well as consider both a historical and contemporary approach to studying the regions of Europe, North and South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and their many contacts, both in the past and present.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish provides courses in Spanish language at all levels, and in Hispanic literature, culture, and civilization. Language courses focus on the development of oral, grammar, writing, and communicative skills, while literature and culture courses help develop critical and analytical skills. You'll have the option to participate in Tandem programs, community interaction, and study abroad opportunities. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared for a range of careers requiring connection and internationalism.

The Bachelor of St’át’imc Language Fluency (B.Stat.) degree is a language-specific program emphasizing immersion-based language learning and community engaged partnerships for Indigenous language revitalization. The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Linguistics provides you with a balanced theoretical and practical education. Working closely with faculty, you receive a strong grounding in theories and issues of additional-language teaching and learning. The Bachelor of Arts in Germanic Studies Degree allows you to build your German language skills and explore Germanic cultures. You have the opportunity to join the exchange program to study or work abroad in a German-speaking country. You’ll explore topics such as German language, Germanic culture, film and the Holocaust.

Greek and Latin Language and Literature: Bachelor of Arts Degree - Major or Honours

The Bachelor of Arts in Greek and Roman Studies allows you to learn how the cultures of the ancient world relate to our own. You'll study the myths, languages, literature, history and archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome.  You have the option to explore the history of these languages in optional field school or a semester abroad. You can also learn how our culture interprets Greek and Roman civilization through film.

In the Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies, you'll study Hispanic cultures and learn Spanish, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. The electives allow you to explore Hispanic history, films and more. Set yourself apart in any career field with your passion for languages and cultures. You have the option to explore the history of these languages in optional field school or a semester abroad.

Hispanic Studies: Bachelor of Arts Degree - Major or Honours

The Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization allows you to expand your Indigenous language proficiency while revitalizing your language in your community. Demonstrate linguistically and culturally grounded teaching strategies. You’ll graduate certified to teach grades K-12 in band-run and public schools in BC. The first two years of this program are delivered in partnership with language communities.

Indigenous Language Revitalization: Bachelor of Education Degree

The Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics lets you follow that passion and open doors to many different careers. Study the structure of languages and learn how the brain organizes language. This program is designed to give you a general background in all aspects of linguistic description and theory. You can use this degree to prepare for all the different career paths that linguists can follow.

The Bachelor of Science in Linguistics lets you follow that passion and open doors to many different careers. Study the structure of languages and learn how the brain organizes language. This program gives you a general background in linguistic description and theory, but with an emphasis on the more quantitative areas of acoustic and auditory phonetics, as well on the cognitive, neural and biological aspects of language (through courses taken in biology and psychology). This program is designed for students who wish to go into careers in speech pathology and audiology, computational linguistics, or speech technology, or who wish to pursue further studies in related fields such as experimental psycholinguistics, music acoustics or health sciences.
