To work as a boat operator in B.C., you are required to complete essential marine safety training courses. You must complete a Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training course as well as one of the following: Master, Master Limited or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) Certification. This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to serve as captains, executive officers, engineers and ranking mates on commercially licensed inland, coastal and ocean-going vessels. These programs include courses in maritime traditions and law; maritime policy; economics and management of commercial marine operations; basic naval architecture and engineering; shipboard power systems engineering; crew supervision; and administrative procedures.

Boat and cable ferry operators and workers in related occupations operate lock gates, bridges and similar equipment along canal systems and operate cable ferries and ferry terminals. This unit group also includes boat operators, and owner-operators, who operate small motorboats or watercraft to transport passengers or freight. They are employed by the federal government, cable ferry companies, ferry terminals, marine companies and canal, port or harbour authorities. Owner-operators of small boats are self-employed.

Other products assemblers, finishers and inspectors assemble, finish and inspect components or products of various materials, such as jewellery, silverware, buttons, pencils, non-prescription lenses, brushes, clocks and watches, musical instruments, sporting goods, toys, boats and other miscellaneous products. They are employed by a wide variety of manufacturing companies.

 The Marine Business Essentials Microcredential program provides essential marine business acumen and relevant operational skills related to the nuances of marine business and movement of goods.

Currently, new and existing mariners are sufficiently skilled in the technical parts of marine shipping. However, many lack the soft and essential knowledge regarding the commercial aspect of shipping, and this program aims to fill that gap.
