This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of engineers and other professionals engaged in shipboard mechanical and electrical engineering and the maintenance and operation of marine engines, including gas, diesel, and steam engines. These programs include courses in automation, diesel-powered systems, electrical circuits and systems, engine performance, hydraulics, manufacturing, motor-powered systems, refrigeration and air-conditioning, steam-powered systems, and welding.

Deck officers, water transport, operate and command ships or self-propelled vessels to transport passengers and cargo on oceans and coastal and inland waters, and supervise and coordinate the activities of deck crews. This unit group also includes Canadian Coast Guard deck officers. They are employed by marine transportation companies and federal government departments. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Engineer officers in water transport, operate and maintain main engines, machinery and auxiliary equipment aboard ships and other self-propelled vessels, and supervise and coordinate the activities of engine room crews. They are employed by marine transportation companies and federal government departments. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Water transport deck and engine room crew stand watch, operate and maintain deck equipment, perform other deck and bridge duties and assist ship engineer officers to operate, maintain and repair engines, machinery and auxiliary equipment aboard ships or self-propelled vessels. They are employed by marine transportation companies and federal government departments.

The Marine Engineering diploma program is a cadet co-operative program. BCIT Marine Engineering students (Cadets) are trained in all mechanical, electrical, and structural aspects of ships; from main engines to auxiliary systems found in all ocean-going vessels ranging from supertankers to cruise ships, cargo ships, and more.

This program is designed to provide hands-on, theoretical, and technical knowledge in the following areas:
    - Propulsion plant operation and maintenance
    - Electronics and electrical technology
    - Ship construction
    - Fuel systems
    - Engineering science and knowledge
    - Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
    - Naval architecture
    - Thermodynamics

Marine Engineering: Diploma

The Electrical Engineering Technology - Marine & Industrial Diploma has been designed to prepare you for employment in the Marine Sector and in the general Industrial Electrical field. This program shares the first year of the Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology - Renewable Energy program. Within the first year, you will learn the fundamental theories and skills necessary to proceed to more advanced industry-specific topics. Later on in the program, topics such as Electric Machines, Power Distribution, Control Theory, and others related to the electrical technology field will be presented. In addition, as an Electrical Engineering Technology—Marine & Industrial student, you have the option to supplement your classroom learning with the completion of up to three paid work terms.
