To practice as a mechanical engineering technologist or technician in B.C., you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited diploma program and 24 months of progressive work experience, 12 of which must be at the technologist profile or higher in a Canadian work environment.

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of engineers engaged in the design and development phases of a wide variety of projects involving mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services or may work independently in mechanical engineering fields such as the design, development, maintenance and testing of machines, components, tools, heating and ventilating systems, geothermal power plants, power generation and power conversion plants, manufacturing plants and equipment. They are employed by consulting engineering, manufacturing and processing companies, institutions and government departments.

The Mechanical Systems Associate Certificate offers a selection of courses related to the design of heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) systems for buildings. You will learn to calculate HVAC loads for various types of buildings using industry standard methods and computer-aided techniques. Alternative energy sources and strategies are emphasized.

Mechanical Systems: Associate Certificate (Part-Time)

The Mechanical Engineering Technology Access Certificate is for students interested in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program who do not currently meet the admission requirements or who wish to refresh their skills before entering the diploma program. While upgrading their academic credentials and learning skills, students will have the opportunity to take one or more courses which will give credit towards the Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma.

Mechanical Engineering Technology Access Certificate

The Mechatronics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology program prepares graduates for careers in the manufacturing industry. With growing reliance on automated technology in the manufacturing sector, technicians are being challenged to perform higher-level tasks that involve diagnostics, analytics, trouble-shooting and hands-on maintenance and repair. Students will acquire critical theoretical and technical knowledge, and hands-on practical experience in applied trades areas such as machining, welding, metal fabrication and electrical. In addition to these skills, students in this program will acquire the knowledge to enable them to prepare technical reports pertaining to the operation and management of an automated manufacturing facility.

Mechatronics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Certificate

The Mechanical Engineering Technician certificate provides learning in Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) and 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools and techniques used in the mechanical processes for mining, energy, chemical processing, and fabrication as well as building systems and commercial development. You will learn to apply concepts in orthographic projection, sectioning, dimensioning, auxiliary view, and machine detailing; employ Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and three-dimensional (3D) modelling systems skills to produce drawings from data, designs, and/or specifications; apply concepts of building construction and technology to plan and detail commercial and industrial facilities in accordance with local by-laws and the BC Building Code, and more.
