To work as a medical radiation technologist in B.C., you must register with the British Columbia Association of Medical Radiation Technologists. Eligibility is achieved by completing an accredited medical radiation technology program and successfully writing the certification exam.

Medical radiation technologists

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians, to employ radioactive and stable nuclides in diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic applications while monitoring for patient health and safety. These programs include courses in nuclear physics, health physics, instrumentation and statistics, biochemistry, immunology, radiopharmacology, radiation biology, clinical nuclear medicine, radionuclide therapy, computer applications, safety regulations, equipment operation, quality control, laboratory procedures, taking patient histories, patient evaluation and monitoring, emergency first aid, administration and record keeping, and personnel supervision.

Nuclear medical technology/technologist

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to administer prescribed courses of radiation treatment, manage patients undergoing radiation therapy, and maintain pertinent records. These programs include courses in applied anatomy and physiology, oncologic pathology, radiation biology, radiation oncology procedures and techniques, radiation dosimetry, tumour localization, treatment planning, patient communication and management, data collection, record keeping, and applicable standards and regulations.

Radiation therapist/therapeutic radiographer

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians, to provide medical imaging services to patients and attending health care professionals. These programs include courses in applied anatomy and physiology, patient positioning, radiographic technique, radiation biology, safety and emergency procedures, equipment operation and maintenance, quality assurance, patient education, and medical imaging/radiologic services management.

Medical radiation technologist/radiographer

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals who are radiological technicians to utilize MRI technology to obtain still and moving images of various vascular structures in the human body that aid the physician in the diagnosis or treatment of disease and injury. These programs include courses in MRI imaging, sectional anatomy and pathology, MRI technology, MRI techniques and procedures, MRI physics, and clinical training.

Medical Radiography Diplomas

Medical radiation technologists operate radiographic and radiation therapy equipment to administer radiation treatment and produce images of body structures for the diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease. They are employed in hospitals, cancer treatment centres, clinics, radiological laboratories, colleges and universities. Medical radiation technologists who are supervisors or instructors are included in this unit group.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Diploma

The Medical Radiology Diploma program trains individuals in X-ray imaging. Students are trained in areas of computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, OR imaging, emergency/trauma, interventional procedures, and mammography.

The Nuclear Medicine Diploma specializes in non-invasive diagnostic imaging. Nuclear medicine stands out for its ability to detect subtle changes in the body’s function, allowing early detection of a wide range of disorders. 

Nuclear Medicine: Diploma

The Medical Radiology Diploma has intensive theoretical and practical instruction through lectures, labs, online courses, and practical experience in a clinical environment. You're expected to act as surrogate patients to learn positioning techniques, as well as interpersonal skills. Clinical placements provide the opportunity to apply your knowledge in hospitals throughout Vancouver Island. You'll learn and practice the same ionizing radiation safety standards and procedures that are strictly enforced at all public health facilities.

Medical Radiography Diploma

The Medical Radiography Technology Diploma prepares you to work in the following areas: in the hospital medical imaging department, at the patient's bedside, in the operating room or Emergency department, and in private imaging clinics. Earning a diploma in medical radiography technology is a base for other certifications, such as advanced radiography certifications and specialized BSc and health administration degrees. These additional qualifications are a key component of health care service.
