These programs include courses in acting, dance, voice, technical theatre, musical genres, piano, and history of musical theatre.

Musical theatre

This instructional program class comprises any general program that focuses on the introductory study and appreciation of music and the performing arts. These programs include courses in music, dance, and other performing arts media.

Music, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the study of the historical evolution of music as a social and intellectual phenomenon, the development of musical instruments and techniques, and the analysis and criticism of musical literature. These programs include courses in music history research methods, aesthetic analysis of musical compositions, history of musical writing and notation, the development of musical instruments, the development of music theory, and the study of specific periods, cultural traditions, styles, and themes.

Music history, literature and theory

This instructional program class comprises any program that generally prepares individuals to master musical instruments and performing art as solo and/or ensemble performers. These programs include courses in one or more specific instruments from various instrumental groupings.

Music performance, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the study of the principles of sound manipulation as applied to the creation of music, and the techniques of creating and arranging music. These programs include courses in aural theory, melody, counterpoint, complex harmony, modulation, chromatics, improvisation, progressions, musical writing, instrumentation, orchestration, electronic and computer applications, studies of specific musical styles, and development of original creative ability.

Music theory and composition

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the systematic study of the forms and methods of music art, and the functions of music, in Western and non-Western societies and cultures. These programs include courses in music theory, musicological research methods, and studies of specific cultural styles such as jazz, folk music, rock, ethnic musical traditions, and the music of non-Western cultures.

Musicology and ethnomusicology

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to master the piano, organ, or related keyboard instruments and performing art as solo, ensemble, and/or accompanist performers. These programs include courses in piano and keyboard pedagogy, ensemble playing, accompanying, service playing, repertoire, keyboard and pedal skills, recital, and personal style development.

Keyboard instruments

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to master the human voice and performing art as solo and/or ensemble performers in concert, choir, opera, or other forms of singing. These programs include courses in voice pedagogy, diction, vocal physiology and exercise, expressive movement, repertoire, recital, and personal style development.

Voice and opera

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to study and master the performance and composition of jazz. These programs include courses in the history of jazz and related musical styles such as the blues, jazz composition and theory, improvisation, jazz instrument and ensemble performance, and related topics.

Jazz/jazz studies

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the creative aspects of the blending of music and technology; and that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to the composition, recording, synthesis, and performance of music; audio-visual production; scoring for film and multimedia; and software and multimedia development. These programs include courses in music theory, music history, composition, acoustics, recording technology, computer composition, electronic music synthesis, technology-based performance, 3D sound and spatial audio, and music business and law.

Musicians and singers perform with orchestras, choirs, opera companies and popular bands in establishments such as concert halls, lounges and theatres and in film, television and recording studios. This unit group also includes music teachers who usually teach in conservatories, academies and private homes.

The Music Performance Diploma is offered through a partnership between the Victoria Conservatory of Music and Camosun College. This program is designed to meet a heightened requirement for versatility in performance style. Increasing demand on artists to participate in creation, along with the quick implementation of music technologies to create, capture, and transfer music, indicates the need for non-traditional training. Upon successful completion of the diploma, you will have deep, practical training in music, instilling the skills vital for success in the 21st-century music workplace.

Music Performance Diploma

The Jazz Studies Diploma provides courses in theory of music, jazz history, ear training and sight singing, jazz performance, rhythmic music, jazz ensemble, jazz choir and more. 

Jazz Studies Diploma

The Music Diploma integrates theoretical, historical and performance studies, offering concentrations in piano, voice, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and composition. You'll spend time in vocal and instrumental ensembles, helping you sharpen your abilities in tuning, tone, phrasing, balance and presentation playing with other musicians.  The diploma also puts a focus on developing your ear training and sight singing, the concepts of organization, including rhythm, pitch, structure, form and style, with special attention paid to growing your knowledge of music history. This two-year Diploma is transferable to a Bachelor of Music Degree and provides the foundation for further studies in Music Education, Music Therapy and the Liberal Arts. 

Music Diploma

The Musical Theatre Diploma program is a career preparation course for those students who are serious about pursuing a career in the performing arts. This program consists of over 35 hours of weekly studio time with opportunities to perform through most of the six terms. Students will refine performance skills in acting, singing, dancing, screen acting, audition techniques, voice-over and learn the business side of the profession with faculty drawn from the professional theatre and screen industries.

Musical Theatre Diploma

The Foundation for Music Therapy Studies Diploma assists you in developing grounded and relaxed guitar and vocal techniques used in the music therapy field. You’ll build your music skills through applied music training in melodic intervals, fingerpicking patterns, chord progressions, healthy vocal techniques, body language for performance and more. As part of your education, a music therapist will supervise your progress so you can discuss techniques and get advice on future steps. You’ll further develop your music therapy techniques by playing and singing music publicly in health care and childcare settings. The blend of music and psychology courses provide the prerequisites for third-year entry into Capilano University’s Bachelor of Music Therapy program.

Foundation for Music Therapy Diploma

The Music Diploma helps you develop your skills through private lessons in voice or your chosen instrument, and take music classes in music theory and history, performing ensembles and class piano. You’ll also have the option to audition for one of Douglas’s performance groups, where you’ll get live performing experience through concerts, recordings and festival appearances. Many Music Diploma graduates transfer to university to pursue careers as public-school music teachers. The diploma program also provides a basis for further studies directed toward performance, composition, private teaching and other careers in music. 

The Music Technology Diploma provides the hands-on training in a variety of audio engineering courses in MIDI, sequencing and synthesis, audio recording, music for film, music scoring, studio setup and maintenance, career development and music ensembles, and more. You'll learn in professional facilities and will graduate ready to start your career in sound engineering, music software, audio engineering, music production and more. 

Music Technology Diploma

The Contemporary Music & Technology program trains musician performers for the commercial music industry. The curriculum includes individual instruction on guitar, voice, bass, drums, saxophone, violin, and keyboards, as well as a solid grounding in music theory and ear training. Individual and ensemble instruction and practice is offered throughout both years of the program. Rock, blues, jazz, folk and world music are the primary instructional styles. 

Contemporary Music and Technology Diploma

The Music diploma will help launch your career in music and music-related professions by learning from some of Canada's finest performers, composers, and producers. Students can audition and specialized in any genre including classical, jazz, contemporary, and electronic music. Students will learn rehearsal methods, improvisation, notation systems, and more. 

 The Jazz Studies program will foster the acquisition of professional skills in a variety of performance genres. It will offer hands-on experience of group music-making through ensembles and promote skills in the fields of: music performance and its study; musical theory and composition; library and Internet research; theoretical and applied keyboarding; theoretical and applied computer technology, multi-track recording and film scoring; theoretical and applied sound recording; techniques and practices fundamental to the music and entertainment industries; music history in general and jazz history in particular; and music as a business.
