These programs include courses in the principles of the various subfields of psychology, research methods, and psychological assessment and testing methods.

Psychology, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the scientific study of the mechanisms and processes of learning and thinking, and associated information encoding, decoding, processing and transmitting systems. These programs include courses in theories of cognition and intelligence; studies of cognitive processes such as memory, sensation, perception, pattern recognition, problem solving, and conceptual thinking; cybernetics; psycholinguistics; and the study of biological and social communications mechanisms and processes.

Cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the scientific study of the unique stages of psychological growth and development of individuals from infancy through childhood. These programs include courses in cognitive and perceptual development, emotional development, personality development, the effects of biological maturation on behaviour, theories of cognitive growth and related research methods, testing and assessment methods for different age levels, research on child and adolescent behaviour therapy, and the psychology of aging.

Developmental and child psychology

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the scientific study of behaviour under experimental conditions and the analysis of controlled behavioural responses. These programs include courses in learning theory, research design and experimental methods, psychological measurement, statistical design and methods, analysis of cognitive and behavioural variables, and the conduct of specialized and large-scale studies.

Experimental psychology

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals for the independent professional practice of clinical psychology, involving the analysis, diagnosis, and clinical treatment of psychological disorders and behavioural pathologies. These programs include courses in clinical assessment and diagnosis, personality appraisal, psychopathology, clinical psychopharmacology, behaviour modification, therapeutic intervention skills, patient interviewing, personalized and group therapy, child and adolescent therapy, cognitive and behavioural therapy, supervised clinical practice, ethical standards, and applicable regulations.

Clinical psychology

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals for the independent professional practice of psychological counselling, involving the provision of therapeutic services to individuals and groups experiencing psychological problems and exhibiting distress symptoms. These programs include courses in counselling theory, therapeutic intervention strategies, patient/counsellor relationships, testing and assessment methods and procedures, group therapy, marital and family therapy, child and adolescent therapy, supervised counselling practice, ethical standards, and applicable regulations.

Counselling psychology

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the application of psychology to the study of the behaviour of individuals in the roles of teacher and learner, the nature and effects of learning environments, and the psychological effects of methods, resources, organization and non-school experience on the educational process. These programs include courses in learning theory, human growth and development, research methods, and psychological evaluation.

Educational psychology

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the application of psychological theories and methods to real-world settings and problems, such as business and industry, government, education, military, and community settings. These programs include courses in applications of psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, counselling, human factors, research methods and statistics, and program evaluation.

To practice as a psychologist in B.C., you must to  register with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. Eligibility is achieved through graduation from an accredited degree program that includes a residency and pre-doctoral internship, and successful completion of a series of examinations for professional practice in psychology.

Managers in social, community and correctional services plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the programs and activities of social service and community agencies, correctional institutions, counselling departments, labour organizations, professional associations, political parties and non-governmental organizations.

Probation officers monitor the conduct and behaviour of criminal offenders serving probation terms and serving sentences of two years less a day. They are employed by provincial governments. Parole officers monitor the reintegration of criminal offenders serving the remainder of sentences on conditional release and individuals that are subject to a long-term supervision order. They also assess inmates and develop rehabilitation programs for criminal offenders who are incarcerated in correctional facilities. They are employed by federal and provincial governments. Both probation and parole officers work in the community and in correctional facilities including young offender's correctional facilities.

Educational counsellors advise current and prospective students on educational issues, career planning and personal development, and coordinate the provision of counselling services to students, parents, teachers, faculty and staff. They are employed by school boards and post-secondary educational institutions.

Career development practitioners and career counsellors (except education) provide assistance and information to job seeker clients on all aspects of employment search and career planning. They also provide advice and information to employer clients regarding employment issues and human resources. They are employed by public or private employment agencies, rehabilitation centres, hospitals, human resource departments of establishments, consulting firms, correctional facilities and by federal and provincial governments. Supervisors of career development practitioners and career counsellors (except education) are included in this unit group.
