Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, install, service and maintain the operating condition of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. These programs include courses in diagnostic techniques, the use of testing equipment and the principles of mechanics, electricity, and electronics as they relate to the repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Refrigeration Mechanic Apprenticeships

Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics install, maintain, repair and overhaul residential central air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems. They are employed by heating, refrigeration and air conditioning installation contractors, various industrial settings, food wholesalers, engineering firms and retail and servicing establishments. Transport refrigeration mechanics are included in this unit group. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic: Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship provides refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic certification through work-based training and in-school technical training. Employers sponsor students for the work-based training and TRU offers the in-school technical training for levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 of your apprenticeship.

Level 1 consists of six weeks of technical training, level 2 consists of seven weeks of technical training and level 3 and 4 each consist of ten weeks of technical training. Once you’ve completed all four levels and the required work-based hours, you’ll receive a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Certificate of Apprenticeship and qualify to write the interprovincial Red Seal exam for your Certificate of Qualification.
