This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the general study of dramatic works and their performance. These programs include courses in major works of dramatic literature, dramatic styles and types, and the principles of organizing and producing full live or filmed productions.

Drama and dramatics/theatre arts, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply artistic, technical and dramatic principles and techniques to the communication of dramatic information, ideas, moods, and feelings through technical theatre methods. These programs include courses in set design, lighting design, sound effects, theatre acoustics, scene painting, property management, costume design, technical direction and production and the use of related computer applications.

Technical theatre/theatre design and technology

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to communicate dramatic information, ideas, moods, and feelings through the achievement of naturalistic and believable behaviour in imaginary circumstances. These programs include courses in voice and acting speech, stage dialects, movement, improvisation, acting styles, theatre history, script interpretation, and actor coaching.

Acting

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to manage the planning, design, preparation, and production of plays and other theatrical entertainment programs. These programs include courses in theatrical design, program management, dramatic production, rehearsal management, personnel management and casting, actor coaching, directing concepts and techniques, theatre history, scene work, script interpretation, business management, marketing, public relations, and communications skills.

Directing and theatrical production

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to design and select costumes for characters in theatre and the performing arts and to serve as part of a production team. These programs include courses in costume design, script analysis, theory and criticism, period styles, history of costume, stage makeup, rendering, and costume construction.

Theatre Diplomas

Workers in other technical and coordinating occupations in motion pictures, broadcasting and the performing arts coordinate and perform specific activities for television, radio and motion picture productions, news broadcasts, theatre and stage productions, and other live or recorded productions. They are employed by television and radio stations and networks, recording studios, motion picture and video production companies, concert promoters and theatre, stage and dance companies.

Assistants and operators in motion pictures, broadcasting, photography and the performing arts perform duties related to these fields. They are employed by television and radio stations and networks, recording studios, motion picture and video production companies and by theatre and stage companies.

Actors, comedians and circus performers perform roles and circus skills in circuses, motion picture, television, theatre and radio productions to entertain a variety of audiences. They are employed by motion picture, television, circuses, theatre and other production companies. This unit group includes acting teachers employed by private acting schools.

Theatre, fashion, exhibit and other creative designers conceptualize and produce designs for film, television, theatre and video productions, garments and textiles, displays and exhibits, and for other creative items such as jewellery and trophies. Theatre designers are employed by performing arts and broadcasting companies and by festivals; fashion designers are employed by clothing and textile companies or may be self-employed; and exhibit designers are employed by museums. Other creative designers in this unit group are employed by manufacturing establishments or may be self-employed.

The Acting for Stage and Screen Diploma provides you with the skills necessary to begin a professional acting career in theatre, television and film. The first year is comprehensive and introduces you to acting for stage and screen, improv, voice, movement, history, and backstage work. In the final two years of the program, you'll concentrate on performance and professional skills as well as directing, acting in film projects and in Theatre department mainstage productions. 

Acting for Stage and Screen Diploma

The Costuming for Stage & Screen Diploma teaches you the technical and creative aspects of costuming for theatre and film. You'll learn costume history, textiles, wardrobe management, cutting and construction techniques while gaining hands-on experience working on campus theatre productions and student film projects. Graduates of the costuming program are well-qualified for entry-level positions in motion picture and theatre costuming departments.

Costuming for Stage and Screen Diploma

The Musical Theatre Diploma program is a career preparation course for those students who are serious about pursuing a career in the performing arts. This program consists of over 35 hours of weekly studio time with opportunities to perform through most of the six terms. Students will refine performance skills in acting, singing, dancing, screen acting, audition techniques, voice-over and learn the business side of the profession with faculty drawn from the professional theatre and screen industries.

Musical Theatre Diploma

The Technical Theatre Diploma is a training program which will give you a thorough grounding in the art of stagecraft by applying a variety of skills and tools in lighting, sound, scenic construction, prop making, scenic paint and stage management to produce numerous productions. You'll also learn about the history of performance and gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a professional theatre crew. Throughout the program, the training evolves into practice, providing hands-on technical and creative support to a variety of live events in the BlueShore Centre for the Performing Arts on both professional and student productions.

Technical Theatre Diploma

The Stagecraft and Event Technology Diploma combines stagecraft classes and practical training in stage lighting, audio techniques, set painting, set design, computer-assisted drafting, stage management, stagecraft for film/tv and history of theatre. During the program, you'll gain experience in a professional environment, with exposure to production pressures equal to those in the entertainment industry. Upon graduation, you may find work in traditional theatre, opera, film and TV, sales and service companies, cruise ships, concert touring, live events and festivals, museums and more.

Stagecraft and Event Technology Diploma

The Theatre Diploma provides classes in speech, movement, acting, production and theatre history in the first year. You’ll also gain valuable experience working on four major plays put on by second-year students working in the box office, being a production assistant, setting up the opening night reception, as well as doing publicity and promotion. In year two, you’ll get on-stage acting experience working with professional directors, set designers and lighting specialists from the arts community, as well as students in the Stagecraft and Event Technology program. You’ll act in one major production each semester, applying the theory you learned in year one. Graduates often transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree at universities both in Canada and abroad, such as UBC, SFU, University of Alberta, Circle in the Square (New York), Neighborhood Playhouse (New York), University of Wales (UK) and more.

Theatre Diploma

The Theatre Arts at Studio 58 Diploma (Acting) is designed to prepare you for a professional career in theatre, film, television, and related arts. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of an integrated voice and body as an expressive tool. Communication with the audience and fellow actors is stressed. Upon graduation, you'll have a professional level of commitment and aptitude and will have acquired the skills to become contributing member of the acting profession. Theatre Arts at Studio 58 (Acting Option) Diploma

This Theatre Arts at Studio 58 Diploma (Production) is designed for individuals with previous design, technical, or backstage theatre experience who wish to learn and develop additional skills in a practical theatre setting. You should have a clear notion in which areas of theatre production in which you wish to concentrate your studies. Theatre Arts at Studio 58 (Production Option) Diploma

The Theatre Diploma introduces you to all areas of theatre, including acting, stagecraft, and performance studies. You'll gain applied, practical experience by working on UFV Theatre productions. The program is suitable for people from a wide range of backgrounds, including direct-entry from high school, international students, mature students, adults who wish to access life-long learning opportunities, and Indigenous students. You do not need to have theatre experience. You'll graduate from the Theatre diploma with enhanced performance and stagecraft skills, an appreciation of theatre and performance, and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively.

The Technical Theatre Diploma emphasizes the technical aspects of theatre. Hands-on experience is fundamental to the program, and you will be learning the skills of technical theatre by working behind the scenes on a wide variety of shows. You will be able to take theoretical and practical courses that explore topics such as props, costumes, sound, stage management, carpentry, running crew, front-of-house management, production management, technical direction, publicity, theatrical make-up, scene painting, special effects, and lighting. 

The Theatre Diploma exposes you to a range of practical elements associated with theatre production, as well as the academic study of theory and theatre history. You will learn how to translate plays from the written script to the stage; the basics of acting techniques including voice, movement, and characterization; and the elements of set design, stagecraft, sound design, lighting design, and costume design. You will study dramatic works from early modern European origins to more recent Canadian productions. Each year, you'll have the opportunity to participate in a season of plays and concerts.
