The Doctor of Medicine (MD) equips you with the knowledge, training, and experience you need to meet the health care challenges of today and tomorrow. As an MD student, you'll work alongside faculty members and physicians to learn the foundations of medicine and patient-centred care, while honing your clinical skills at hospital wards, community clinics, and doctors’ offices in urban and rural settings across British Columbia. During the clinical years of the program (years three and four), you’ll work in hospital wards, community clinics, and doctors’ offices across BC, meeting patients and working closely with a wide range of health professionals. You'll also have the opportunity to partake in a variety of initiatives to further develop your skills. Graduates have successfully secured medical residency positions in areas ranging from family medicine and pediatrics, to cardiology and emergency medicine.

1. Completion of minimum 90 credits of university-level study by April of the year for which admission is sought, including required university-level prerequisite* coursework. 
    - A full year of English (minimum of 6 credits) is the only required prerequisite coursework. However, courses in general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry are strongly recommended. Courses in physics, statistics and the social sciences are also recommended as general preparation for the MCAT and for medical school.
    - The Science Courses Chart provides a list of recommended science courses, as they were previously accepted as science prerequisites. 
    - The English Courses Chart provides a list of accepted English prerequisite courses. 

2. Minimum 75% average for BC applicants and a 85% average for out-of-province applicants are required, on all university-level courses attempted.

3. Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and request that your results be released to UBCV = a minimum score of 124 in each of the four sections on a single exam.
    - Note: Only the new version of the MCAT (MCAT 2015) is accepted. The sections on this exam version are BBFL, CPBS, PSBB and CARS. 

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Essay and proof of ancestry if you wish to apply as an Indigenous applicant (Status Indians, Non-Status Indians, Métis, or Inuit)

2. List of extracurricular activities

3. Report of non-academic experiences and rural interest statement

4. Resume (employment history)

5. Three references, when required

6. Rural/remote Suitability Evaluation (if applicable)

7. Interview (if granted, which follows the Multiple Mini-Interview format where each applicant rotates through 10 different stations)

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. No particular degree program is considered ideal as preparation for the study and practice of medicine. A variety of pre-medical academic backgrounds is considered desirable.

2. Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada may apply to the program. Persons with refugee status in Canada can also apply, however admission will be contingent on attaining permanent residency in Canada and providing proof of this status two weeks prior to the start of classes. International students are unable to apply. 

3. Preference is given to residents of BC. However, a small number of out-of-province applicants are accepted each year. 

4. You must apply using the online application available on the Faculty of Medicine website.

5. Admission is extremely competitive. There are far more applicants than available spaces in the program. Details on admission criteria and selection process can be found at M.D. Undergraduate Admissions.

6. The Faculty of Medicine’s distributed education model provides 308 annual medical school seats based at four regional medical programs. See Academic Calendar for detailed descriptions. 
    - 36 students in the Northern Medical Program (NMP) = based at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George
    - 36 students in the Island Medical Program (IMP) = based at the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island
    - 36 students in the Southern Medical Program (SMP) = based at UBCV’s Okanagan campus in Kelowna
    - 200 students in the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) = based at UBCV Vancouver’s Point Grey campus
