RRU Introduction

Applicants who do not have the formal academic education to qualify for admission may be assessed on the basis of both their formal education and their informal learning, in accordance with the Flexible Admission Policy at Royal Roads University. This includes applicants with a complex learning history and for whom documenting their learning is either difficult or complex.

1. Support for international students are available at Royal Roads University (RRU) whether you are a prospective international student or current international student at RRU.

2. If English is not your primary language, you are required to meet Royal Roads University's English Language Requirements (for applicants applying for third-year entry to undergraduate programs) through one of the following ways:

- Completion of a diploma or degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction in an English speaking country
Or
Test score from one of the English Language Proficiency test options:
- IELTS Academic (6.5 overall, with at least 6.5 in writing and speaking, and 6.0 in listening and reading)
- TOEFL iBT (88 overall, with at least 24 in writing, and 20 in listening, reading and speaking)
- PTE-A (60 overall, with at least 60 in writing and speaking, and 58 in listening and reading)
- DET (115 overall with at least 110 for literacy, comprehension and conversation, and 115 for production)
- Completion one of RRU's international pathway programs (University Academic Preparation)

Transfer agreements are essentially a pre-approval to transfer credits between institutions, provided you meet all other admission requirements. If the post-secondary institution or program you attended isn't included on our list, you may still qualify for admission. Contact an enrolment advisor for more information.

Royal Roads University does not have a specific Mature Student admission category. However, Royal Roads University's Flexible Admission Process may serve the needs of mature students, if you do not have the formal academic training to qualify for your desired program.

RRU Mature Students

English is the primary language of instruction and communication in all domestic programs at Royal Roads University (RRU). As part of the application process, all applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English speaking, listening, reading and writing when you apply. Verify the following information with RRU directly. 

For applicants applying for first-year entry with English Language Support*:

One of:

- IELTS Academic (6.0 overall, with at least 5.5 in listening and reading, and 6.0 in writing and speaking)
- TOEFL iBT (79 overall, with at least 18 each in reading, 23 in writing, 19 in listening and speaking)
- PTE-A (55 overall, with at list 55 in writing and speaking, and 51 in listening and reading)
- DET (105 overall with at least 95 in literacy, comprehension, conversation and production)
- Note(*):
- There are three programs with language support:
- Bachelor of Business Administration in Innovation and Sustainability
- Bachelor of Arts in Global Tourism Management
- Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel Management

If you don't meet the minimum language requirements, you may still be conditionally admitted by enrolling in one of the international pathway programs through the Royal Roads University's Global Learning and Language Centre.

For applicants applying for first-year entry to undergraduate programs:

One of:
- Completion of a diploma or degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction in an English speaking country
- Test score from one of the English Language Proficiency test options:
- IELTS Academic (6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0)
- TOEFL iBT (88 overall, with at least 20 each in reading, writing, listening and speaking)
- PTE-A (60 overall, with no section below 58)
- Completion one of RRU's international pathway programs

For applicants applying for third-year entry to undergraduate programs: 

One of:
- Completion of a diploma or degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction in an English speaking country
