The Bachelor of Education in Elementary Curriculum prepares you for the always-changing challenges and responsibilities of teaching in today’s elementary and middle years classrooms. This practicum-based program gets you hands-on classroom experience. You’ll graduate at the leading edge of your field with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and be eligible to apply for a B.C. teaching certificate. 

This program can lead to teaching in French.

Option A: Year One Entry

1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. All of the following Grade 12 courses:
    - English 12 (67%) or equivalent 
    - Three approved academic 12 courses

3. All of the following Grade 11 courses:
    - English 11 or equivalent
    - Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11 or equivalent
    - Science 11 or equivalent
    - Social Studies 11/12 or equivalent

Estimate admission average: 90%

Option B: Year Two Entry
The following admission prerequisites must be completed by April 30 for entry to Year-Two:

1. Three units (two courses) of approved English with at least C+ in each course
    - Competence in written English
    - Three units (two courses) of Canadian Studies
    - Three units (two courses) of Math (C+ average) and must be completed within 10 years of entry to year-two of the program
    - Three units (two courses) of laboratory science which must be completed within 10 years of entry to year-two of the program)
    - Three units (two courses) of approved academic electives*
    - Minimum C+ term GPA calculated on either:
    - Most recent session/term of 12 UVIC units (24 credits = approximately 8 courses) attempted 
2. All university-level courses attempted; and also meet the minimum high school academic requirements for year-one entry

Note:

These year-one courses can be completed at in another Faculty at UVic or at another post-secondary institution.

At UVIC, the value of courses is given in units. Most courses at UVic that run for one term count for 1.5 units per course. For example, 3 UVIC units are equivalent to two (half-year) courses or 6 credits at most BC colleges and universities.

*Electives: choose from subjects related to those taught in BC schools such as art, computer science, French, geography or physics. Courses from professional programs such as child and youth care, education and social work are not normally approved.

Academic Admission Requirement

For students applying for Year-Two entry ONLY

1. Minimum of 75 hours of practical experience working with groups of children or youth at the age level you wish to teach (Kindergarten to Grade 8)

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. All applicants to UVic (regardless of country of origin or citizenship status) are required to demonstrate competence in the English language prior to admission. You can choose one of several ways to demonstrate language proficiency. You are not required to provide proof of language proficiency if you have studied full time for at least four years within Canada at the high school and/or post-secondary level, and all of your instruction has been in English.
2. Admission averages for Year-One Entry are calculated using all required Grade 12 courses for entry to a program. For more details, including admission requirements for all applicant categories (including students from outside of BC), see the UVic admissions site for this Program.
3. If you aren't selected for year-one entry, you have the option of completing year-one courses at UVic in another faculty or at another post-secondary institution and then apply to year-two.
4. For students who study at another post-secondary institution in BC, you can use BC Transfer Guide to find out course equivalency and transferability.
5. It's strongly recommended that you contact a Faculty of Education academic advisor at UVic for assistance with navigating the admission requirements.

Admission Advice

Applications must be submitted by the following dates:			
    - Online application to UVic: January 31		
    - Supplemental application to the program (if applicable): January 31	
		
Proof of English language proficiency: typically one month after the application deadline. Your language-proficiency deadline will be indicated in your online application checklist after you submit your online application to UVic. 			
	
High school students and graduates applying for first-year entry do not need to submit a supplemental application.
