The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate is for students who want a concentrated study of teaching and tutoring English as an additional language. Classes are offered in the hybrid format, in one intensive semester of study. Students gain practical knowledge in teaching language, designing and delivering courses, and managing a classroom. The program includes a 25-hour practicum.

1. High school graduation or equivalent or

    - One course short of B.C. secondary school graduation
    - 19 years old by the end of the first month of the first semester of attendance
    - 17 years old on the first day of the first semester of attendance and has not been in school for at least one year
    - Completion of a certificate or equivalent from a special needs program and has been in school for 12 years, or has received an Evergreen or Leaving School Certificate

2. English 12 (B) or equivalent*

*Note: based on both the course grade and provincial literacy assessment


1. One reference from a former/current instructor, employer, or volunteer coordinator who can attest to good character, temperament, willingness to learn, oral communication skills, ability to cooperate with others, and appropriateness for undertaking TESL studies

Admissions to open-enrollment programs are offered on a first-qualified, first-admitted basis. Students are encouraged to apply early.

- January intake- applications typically open in early February of the previous year until late December / early January.
- May intake- applications typically open in early June of the previous year until late April / early May.
