 The Bachelor of Science, Major in Computer Science, is designed to meet the training and educational requirements outlined by CIPS (Canadian Information Processing Society), ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). These requirements reflect the needs of the computing industry, both nationally and internationally. The program is composed of courses drawn from the systems, theoretical and business application domains. It is designed to train you in applied computer science and educate them in the social, ethical and legal implications of computer science.

Option A. Year One
1. High school graduation or equivalent
2. English 12 (C) or equivalent
3. Pre-calculus 12 (B) or equivalent

OR

Option B. Year Two
1. Completion of at least 24 credits in undergraduate study towards VIU's Bachelor of Science Computer Science Major program, including MATH 123 (C) and CSCI 161 (C)

Note: Competitive admission averages will be calculated based on all program-required MATH and CSCI courses.

OR 

Option C: Year Three
1. One of:
    - Completion of at least 54 credits in undergraduate study towards VIU's Bachelor of Science Computer Science Major program, including CSCI 260 (C) and CSCI 265 (C)
    - Completion of a recognized 2-year Computer Science diploma normally including completion of the Degree English Requirement.

Note: Competitive admission averages will be calculated based on all program-required MATH and CSCI courses.

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Admission to the third year of the Major in Computing Science requires completion of MATH 121, MATH 122, MATH 123, CSCI 160, and CSCI 161, with a minimum C+ or 2.33 GPA in all program-required MATH and CSCI courses.

2. Enrolment in this program is limited. Meeting and/or exceeding the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. 

3. Applicants will be prioritized by overall Grade Point Average. A wait list will be created if required.

4. Aboriginal students can apply for reserve seats by submitting the Access Initiative for Aboriginal Students form.

5. It is possible to complete some of the courses required for the program before officially admitted to the program, as long as that space is available and course registration prerequisites are met. For details, please contact a VIU academic advisor. Students who take courses in Computer Science without being formally admitted into the program are not guaranteed entry into the program.

Admission Advice

Applications are accepted for September entry until July 14 for domesic students, and until April 30 for international students. Early application is recommended.
