The Ceramics Studio Certificate provides instruction in forming techniques, glaze technology, surface treatment and kiln operation by combining studio and conceptual skills. The courses within the Ceramics Studio Certificate program will refine and strengthen your creative talents. In your studio time, you will obtain confidence with ceramic processes, knowledge of studio safety, and achieve individual goals. Our practicing artist instructors demonstrate and assign exercises in contemporary ceramic design methods as well as traditional techniques in handbuilding, mold making, wheel forming, glazing and firing.

(Minimum grade)
1. One of:
    - High school graduation or equivalent
    - Minimum 19 years of age
      Note: If you are under the age of 19 and/or do not have a BC senior secondary school diploma or     
      equivalent, you must be enrolled in a secondary school transitions program, be enrolled in a program 
      under an agreement with the local school district, or have written consent from a parent or guardian and 
      letters of support from people who are familiar with your circumstances, such as a school principal or 
      health care provider.

2. English 12 (60%) or equivalent


Academic Admission Requirement


1. Questionnaire and portfolio using the Kootenay Studio Arts online form (at least one week prior to your scheduled interview date)
2. Portfolio (demonstrating visual awareness, creativity and technical skills
3. Interview with a program instructor from the Kootenay School of the Arts program (telephone interviews for applicants who cannot attend in person due to distance)

Additional Academic Admission Requirement


1. The questionnaire helps the program to understand your interest and commitment to the studio program.  

2. The portfolio is designed to access your skill level to help instructors increase your chances of success in your studio program. The portfolio pieces may be of any medium and they do not need to be specific to studio preference. Visit program website to see details on portfolio guidelines.

3. The interview is an opportunity for you to introduce yourself, present your work and discuss your interests within the arts. The instructor will assess your preparedness for entry into the program and will ask about commitment, goals and expectations, design knowledge, experience and communication skills. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the program and for faculty to recommend upgrading if necessary.

Admission Advice

Applications may be submitted up to 12 months before the program start date, in September. Qualified applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Early application is recommended.

International students are advised to apply well in advance to allow for appropriate time for Study Permit processing.
