The Bachelor of Music in Composition provides an array of opportunities for the creation, exploration, and performance of contemporary music. The School of Music houses an electronic music studio for students interested in creating works which involve sound synthesis, digital audio editing, or interactive computer music. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared for a career composing or working in the music industry.

1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. English 12 and English 11 or their equivalents (70% in one of them)

3. Minimum six academic/non-academic Grade 12 courses (recommended)

4. Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations or Math 12 or equivalent 

5. Any Science 11 or Science 12 course or equivalent 

6. A Language 11 or Waiver (includes all second language courses, excludes introductory language 11 courses)

7. Grades presented in all relevant academic Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses that fall under these subject categories* will be looked at:
    - Language Arts
    - Second Languages 
    - Visual and Performing Arts 
        - *Note: There is no minimum number of courses required for admission, but you are encouraged to challenge yourself with a substantial number of courses that are relevant to your intended area of study.

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Complete a Personal Profile

2. Audition (in-person or video)

3. Two letters of reference

4. Three short-answer questions (150-250 words each):
    - What is your most significant musical experience?
    - What are your motivations and goals for pursuing a BMus degree?
    - Why are you interested in studying at UBC Music?

5. Submission of three to six original scores to the School of Music and corresponding audio recordings to the software system 

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Applicants must enter the program with proficiency in at least one instrument. Requirements are the same as those for the general studies concentration on all instruments except piano, where a somewhat lower level (about RCM Grade 8 for 1st year) will be considered if the applicant is especially strong creatively.
