The Bachelor's Degree in Education, Elementary-French Cohort is designed for teacher candidates who wish to specialize in teaching French as a second language (French immersion or intensive French) or French as a first language (in a Francophone school) at the elementary level. Most courses are delivered and assignments are completed in French. This allows you to continue to develop your proficiency while in the program.

The UBCV Teacher Education Program is a post-baccalaureate program that requires a completed three-year degree (minimum).

1. Completion of a Bachelor degree equivalent to a four-year, 120 credit UBCV Bachelor degree at an accredited post-secondary institution, including the following 30 credits of specific coursework:

    - Minimum 6 credits of English literature and composition, or equivalent. (Applicants applying to the French Immersion option may complete 6 credits of French literature and composition.)
    - Minimum 3 credits of a laboratory science (laboratory science courses are normally selected from the life sciences, chemistry, physical geography, earth and ocean studies, geology, astronomy, or physics).
    - Minimum 3 credits of mathematics (not statistics or business mathematics).
    - Minimum 6 credits of Canadian content (including at least 3 credits of Canadian history or geography)
    - Minimum 12 senior-level credits (third- or fourth-year level) from non-Education coursework.

2. Recently completed 60 credits (65% GPA)

3. One of:

    - Proof of English language Proficiency 
    - Completion of a degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution at which English is the primary language of instruction in a country where English is the principal language

Note: If you are applying for a French specialization, the DELF/DALF is required (results are due June 30)

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Minimum 100 hours of practical experience (volunteer or paid) working with groups of at least 10 or more children or youth, preferably at the age range you are proposing to teach. For the elementary or middle years program, your experience should be with large groups of children aged 5-13. This experience should be documented within the past five years, preferable within the last two years*.
    - *Note: 50 experience hours should be from a single, continuous experience.
2. Personal Profile completion

1. To enter the Elementary French Specialist cohort, you need:
    - Specific elementary academic courses and experience with children (5 to 12 years old)
    - Completion of Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF)/Diplôme approfondi de langue française (DALF)
2. A criminal records check will be required of all teacher candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Education program.

3. Applicants are recommended to draw their two confidential referee reports from supervisors who have observed the applicant and can attest to an applicant's effectiveness when working with children/youth and suitability to enter a teacher education program.

5. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program will have the option to select a learning cohort with a particular theme of pedagogical approach.  

6. Admission into the UBCV teacher education program is competitive, and meeting the minimum requirements is not a guarantee of admission.

Admission Advice

Applications must be submitted for most programs by January for September entry. Early application is recommended. Confirm dates with UBCV.
Exceptions of certain programs are available on UBCV Vancouver Academic Calendar 2023/24.
